Monday, February 8th, 2010

These questions for all time dwell in the minds of many irritated patients who suffer from minor to severe irritable bowel syndrome, diarrhea, weight problems and joint pains. There are several ways of colon cleansing process and some involve painful method and so if you are taking steps to having a clean colon, you might want to continue reading this useful article.

In the colon, water is squeezed out and absorbed from food remnants, leaving behind a mixture of non-digestible fiber, bacteria, bile acids and cells that have been worn off the intestinal wall. If bowel transit time is too slow, bacteria and fungi proliferate and toxins are reabsorbed. A healthy colon eliminates waste within six to 18 hours after every meal–this means having two or three bowel movements a day.

We are not operational for the processing of artificial preservatives and nitrates, nor to assimilate huge portions of food, not to sit happily in one place without giving proper exercise to our bodies in order to stop working the hundreds of calories we load our bodies with day after day. It is ironic that this inactive form of lifestyle is on the increase in popularity while Obesity is at an all time high. But do we care to see whether

there is any association between the two? It is also sad that although the optional dosage of fiber per day is twenty five to thirty three grams, most people never reach even anywhere near halfway there.

Yoga for Constipation, Treat Constipation Naturally

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

Constipation is a common problem of the digestive area. If the bowels do not move regularly or are not completely emptied and even after moving; you are constipated. Most people who are mildly constipated do not need laxatives. For many people, however, the amount of fruits and vegetables that are necessary may be inconveniently large or may not provide adequate relief from constipation.

In this case, they can take laxatives or colon cleanser products for a limited period. A natural colon cleanse can solve these problems by flushing out the toxins and decaying fecal matter. Colon cleansing is what supposed to be the single most effective means of maintaining the overall health of your digestive tract. Interestingly, a natural colon cleanse process is very different from a laxative methodology.

Regular exercise is also important in establishing regular bowel movements. If you are confined to a wheelchair or bed, change position frequently and perform abdominal contraction exercises and leg raises. A physical therapist can recommend exercises appropriate for your physical abilities.

The yoga poses that must be performed for constipation are;

* The Peacock pose or the Mayurasana

* The abdominal lifts

* And various breathing exercises that help us to regulate the digestive system.

* The seated poses.

* The cobra pose or Bhujangasana

* Dhanurasana increases blood flow in the pancreas and the intestinal area.

* Nadi Shodhana Pranayam is also very beneficial.

* Mulabandha

* Ardha Matsyendrasana

* Bhastrika with Kumbhaka

* Kapalbhati Pranayam

You can adapt a number of lifestyle changes as a remedy for constipation. They are as follows: –

A) Get up early in the morning and go for a walk daily.

B) Avoid tight clothes or belts. These can hold back your digestive system.

C) Limit intake of tobacco, tea, coffee and hot spices.

D) Don’t take daily naps and especially within 3 hours of eating.

E) Fast at least once in a week.

F) Make a schedule and stick to it because schedules work well with your body’s natural body clock.

G) Exercise regularly for at least 20-25 minutes daily.

Constipation - Causes, Symptoms and Treatments,

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Do you know what causes constipation? You probably say that not getting enough fiber is what causes people to suffer from constipation. This is true but it is not the only reason people become constipated. There are a few other things that can constipation. One of the causes of constipation is not heeding the call to go to the bathroom. How many times have you been at work or out in public and held it in because you didn’t want to take the time to go to the bathroom? Holding in it will damage the nerves that line the bowel. When these nerves become damaged the colon will not be able to work as it should.

There is no need of over the counter medications and pharmaceutical stool softeners required. You just need natural products in order to fix your stomach problems. Bulimia and anorexic patients are the ones who achieve rapid weight loss. Water and apple, pear or prune juices are the ones which add softening elements to your digestive system and thus improve digestion.

High fat and low fiber diet is the reason for constipation. If you replace your diet with good fiber content and water there is no need for any other medication. It is often said that consuming such over the counter medications may make you get addicted to it.

While chronic constipation problems are usually the result of poor diet and lifestyle, temporary constipation can be caused by a host of factors. A heavy night of drinking can cause dehydration, which will result in hard, dry stool. A new pain medication or antidepressant may also lead to regularity problems. Stress is a huge cause of constipation and one of the big reasons for its frequency.

Simply withholding bowel movements (a common cause of childhood constipation) can lead to infrequency. But, while all of these things and more may lead to temporary constipation, the good news is that it will go away once the cause has been addressed. It is chronic constipation problems that are the real cause for concern as they can be a sign of a much larger and potentially more dangerous medical issue.

Diabetes is a condition where the body is unable to properly regulate blood glucose levels via insulin. A side effect of diabetes is dehydration, which then leads to the constipation, which is often present with diabetes. Proper treatment will reduce the blood glucose spikes and reduce dehydration but it may still be necessary to hydrate more than normal to prevent constipation problems from arising.

How to Get Rid of Constipation

Saturday, November 14th, 2009

Constipation is a common problem of the digestive area. If the bowels do not move regularly or are not completely emptied, even after moving; you are constipated. Pain or heaviness in the abdomen, loss of appetite, drowsiness, nausea, pain in the lower legs and vertigo are some of the well known symptoms of constipation. Constipation leads to many diseases.

Following are few remedies of constipation –

1. Dietary fiber – Increase the intake of fruit and vegetables (minimum of five servings of fruit or vegetables daily) to your diet. It is known to be the best way of adding fiber. Fiber supplements can also be used.

2. Lubricant laxatives- These contain mineral oil which resides within the intestine. It coats the particles of stool and apparently controls the removal of water from the stool which results in the stool to go softer. Since the long term use of mineral oil has several disadvantages, it is only used for the short-term healing of constipation. It can attract fat-soluble vitamins. If it is used for long periods, there can be vitamin deficiencies.

3. Hyperosmolar laxatives - These are undigestible, unabsorbable compounds. Hyperosmolar laxatives remain within the colon and preserve the water that already is in the colon. This results in softening of the stool. The most common hyperosmolar laxatives are lactulose, sorbitol, and polyethylene glycol and most importantly, these are available by prescription only. These laxatives has few side effects and considered to be safe for prolong use.

4. Stool softeners – these are also called emollient laxatives which contain a compound which is a wetting agent called decussate. It betters the capability of water in the colon to go through and merge with stool. Thus the higher water (in the stool) leads to the softening of the stool. These are generally used in the long-term healing of constipation. It can take around a week’s time or more for decussate to be helpful. But even after you see no effect, the dose should be increased. These are generally used when stool has to soften for short duration. For example after childbirth, surgery, or heart attack.

5. Saline laxatives - These contain magnesium hydroxide, magnesium citrate and sodium phosphate which are non-absorbable ions. While remaining in the colon, these ions help water to be strained into the colon and help soften of the stool.  These laxatives act very quickly but it is not recommended to use them on regular basis. Dehydration may occur due to the development of diarrhea with the use of this laxative. Milk of magnesia is the most regularly used and strongest of the saline laxatives.

You can adapt a number of lifestyle changes as a remedy for constipation. They are as follows -

Do not completely depend on laxatives as a constipation remedy. While these may be effective once in awhile but their effect is temporary. Excessive use can cause side effects.

Dairy products, greasy foods, alcohol, and caffeine are just a few of the products we consume that can lead to constipation problems.

Signs and symptoms of constipation:

* Abdominal cramps or pain

* Loss of appetite

* Bad breath

* Diarrhea

Some causes constipation? Constipation can result from a number of factors and include:

* A diet low in fiber (which lacks whole grains, fruit and vegetables)

* An inactive lifestyle

* Conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), spinal injury, kidney failure etc…

* Change in environment

Many doctors do not go looking for the cause of your problem. They do not have the time for this research. In fact, they normally will not tell you what you need to do to prevent your illness. Sometimes the reason they will not disclose to you is they just do not know. Its becoming more a nutritionist’s or naturopathic doctor’s job to tell you what foods and supplements you need to consume to prevent and to overcome specific illnesses and what to eat to eliminate or stop constipation.

What is the reason for so many people dying of heart diseases, blood diseases, cancers, autoimmune diseases and the list goes on. It has been know for a longtime why diseases occur and what you can do to prevent it? These death producing illnesses are a result of how and what we eat, the type of water we drink, and the pollutants in the air But perhaps one of the most important causes of diseases that are seldom discussed comes from the thoughts we think.

Try Triphala for your digestion system. It is an herbal compound comprising the fruits of Indian Gooseberry and Billerica Myrobalan. It helps in supporting the digestive system, relieves constipation. One tablet every day and see your intestinal flora for good bacteria that are also better able to multiply, so the bad bacteria are reduced.
